About Dayton
Dayton is a city in and the county seat of Montgomery County, Ohio, United States, in the southwestern part of the state. The population was 166,179 at the 2000 census. The Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Montgomery, Miami, Greene, and Preble counties, had a population of 835,535 in 2007. Dayton is situated within the Miami Valley region of Ohio, just north of the Cincinnati metropolitan area.
Dayton plays host to significant industrial, aerospace, and technological/engineering research activity and is known for the many technical innovations and inventions developed there. The city was the home of the signing of the Dayton Peace Accords, which brought an end to the war in Bosnia. The Wright brothers, poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, and entrepreneur John H. Patterson were born in Dayton. The Dayton area is home to several major international, national, and regional corporations, including NCR, Reynolds and Reynolds, CareSource, Cargill, ChemStation International, Liberty Bank, NewPage Corporation, Standard Register, WorkflowOne (formerly Relizon), Huffy Bicycles, LexisNexis, and Mead prior to becoming MeadWestvaco. It was formerly home of Speedwell Motor Car Company.
Culture and Recreation
Dayton is home to the Dayton Art Institute, a museum of fine arts. The National Museum of the United States Air Force is at nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and is the largest and oldest military aviation museum in the world. Wright Patterson AFB was known as Wright Field during WWII and an extensive underground facility was built especially to reverse engineer technology from captured German V2 rockets. It is a documented fact that whatever the debris was that came down on Mac Brasel's ranch in 1947, was originally shipped to Roswell Army-Air Force Base, then transported to 8th Air Force in Texas. The debris of the UFO and alien bodies were transported to Wright Field in July, 1947.
The Dayton Metro Library is a library system consisting of 23 locations across the metropolitan area, with the Main Library located in downtown Dayton.
The Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park commemorates the lives and achievements of Dayton natives Orville and Wilbur Wright and Paul Laurence Dunbar.
Dayton Business Climate and Employment
Despite a downturn in the national economy, Dayton remains one of the nation's top development area for high technology and new job growth. Dayton has the most corporate projects in development for cities with a population between 200,000 and 1 million.
The Conway Data New Plant Database, the tracking service of Site Selection Magazine, showed the Dayton area had 41 projects last year. Akron and Toledo were right behind, with 39 and 38 projects, respectively.
Those cities, along with Cincinnati, 124 projects; Columbus, 77 projects; and Cleveland, 67 projects, also helped Ohio win the Governor's Cup Award for 2008. The award goes to the state with the most new and expanded corporate facilities.
Ohio had 503 projects, marking the third year in a row for the state winning the award and the fourth in six years. In 2007, the state had 399 projects.
Significant deals in the Dayton area include RevWires LLC's $5 million factory in Troy, Reynolds and Reynolds Co.'s $24 million data center in Kettering and CACI International's $10 million computer systems plant in Beavercreek. |
